There’s something about the sea that really can help make you feel calm, and if you're anything like me, sleepy too!

Whether it's the rhythmic crash of waves, the wide open skies, or the salt air, walking by the coast offers a different kind of therapy. And Kent, with its long and varied coastline, is full of sea-kissed trails perfect for when you need to take some time away from the world. We are also fortunate to be able to spot some amazing birds and marine mammals on our coastline too.

Here are five coastal routes I recommend:

Sandwich Bay to Deal – Flat, open, and often quiet, this route offers birdlife, shingle beaches, and views that stretch out to sea. Stop for coffee in Deal or continue to the castle.

Minnis Bay to Reculver Towers – A wide promenade and big skies accompany you to the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Reculver’s twin towers. At low tide, you can walk right beneath the cliffs.

Kingsdown to St Margaret’s at Cliffe – Less crowded than Dover’s cliffs but just as dramatic, this chalky route dips and climbs with sweeping views over the Channel.

Isle of Sheppey, Shellness – Remote and often windblown, this is where to go when you want solitude. Watch for marsh harriers and wading birds.

The Warren, Folkestone – Wild and rugged, this cliffside path and beach is a great place to walk off stress and marvel at nature’s raw power.

My heart belongs in woodlands, so I often forget just how lucky we are to have both on our doorstep.
