This Winter I am helping a fellow North Downs Way Ambassador who runs a hiking group in Surrey as he recovers from an operation by hosting two of his walks. Please note this needs to be booked via his website and not through the usual channel on this website. Below are the details along with a booking link, which will take you to his website to book directly.
Join Jenn on this beautiful 8.5 mile circular walk through Knole Park and the Kent countryside, starting from Sevenoaks Train Station.
With a direct train journey of around 45 minutes from London, Sevenoaks is an easy place to escape the city and spend a few hours exploring the countryside on foot.
Our route takes us into Knole Park, one of England’s last remaining medieval deer parks. The park is home to herds of wild deer, which have roamed the estate for more than 500 years.
We’ll make our way towards Knole House, the impressive historic house at the heart of the estate, before joining the Greensand Way. This long-distance trail runs through Surrey and Kent and gives us some fantastic views across the Weald.
The walk
We’ll start at Sevenoaks Train Station and make our way towards Knole Park, where we’ll have the chance to spot the famous deer and take in the views across the estate. We’ll stop outside Knole House, a fascinating “calendar house” with 365 rooms, 52 staircases and 7 courtyards, said to represent the days, weeks and months of the year.
From Knole, we’ll join the Greensand Way, following the trail through a mixture of ancient woodland and open countryside. Along the way, we’ll take time to enjoy the views across the Kentish Weald and point out some of the varied flora and wildlife found along the route.
The route then loops back through quieter woodland and open paths before returning to Knole Park, giving us another opportunity to spot the deer, before heading back towards Sevenoaks Train Station.
This is a lovely walk combining history, wildlife, woodland and some beautiful views across the Kent countryside.
Come and walk with us
Our mixed group walks are open to everyone.
Whether you’re already a regular walker, new to the group, coming on your own or simply looking for a good excuse to get out into the countryside, you’re very welcome. Around 80% of our members come to our walks on their own, and it is one of the things people love most about being part of the group.
You don’t need to know anyone before you arrive. Just bring your walking boots, enjoy the scenery and we’ll take care of the rest.
