A Hundred Acre Adventure: Winnie-the-Pooh’s Ashdown Forest

Group Guided Walk

Overview:

Join us for something truly iconic as we step into the landscape that inspired one of the most beloved literary worlds of all time. This is a full-day 10-mile adventure through the heart of the Ashdown Forest; better known to many as the real-life Hundred Acre Wood. A place where imagination, childhood stories and ancient landscape intertwine.

The forest famously inspired A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, with his son Christopher Robin roaming these very woods. Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and friends were born from this landscape. It’s also a place deeply connected to C. S. Lewis, who spent time in the area; the wild, open heath and ancient woodland echoing the kind of landscape that shaped the imaginative worlds of British children’s literature in the early 20th century.

Expect a mixture of sandy forest tracks, heathland paths and undulating woodland terrain. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended due to the distance and some steady climbs.

Route Details:

We begin in the centre of Five Hundred Acre Wood, immediately immersing ourselves in the quiet magic of Ashdown Forest. This is a stunning mosaic of open heathland and ancient trees, silver birch, oak and pine with wide, sweeping views across the Sussex landscape.

Our first stretch is wonderfully peaceful. Away from the main tourist spots, the forest feels spacious and wild, with long sandy tracks and very few people around. It’s easy to see how this landscape sparked the imagination of Milne, and why it continues to feel so atmospheric today.

We gradually make our way towards the village of Hartfield. Here, the pace changes slightly as we head along the High Street; one of the busier sections of our walk. We’ll stop at the famous Pooh Corner, the much-loved Pooh shop and museum. This is a chance to grab a coffee, browse the themed displays, and soak up the nostalgia of the Pooh classics. It’s a popular spot, but it’s part of the story and we wouldn’t be here without paying homage to this special bear.

From Hartfield, we continue towards Pooh Bridge; another well-known landmark. This is the original bridge where “Poohsticks” was played. We’ll collect sticks along the way and of course have the opportunity to play a round ourselves. Keep your eyes peeled in the woodland here. you may spot carved characters and subtle nods to the stories hidden among the trees.

Once we leave Pooh Bridge behind, the crowds quickly thin. The forest opens up again and we return to quieter paths, climbing steadily towards Gill’s Lap -the highest point in Ashdown Forest and widely regarded as the inspiration for Galleons Lap in the Pooh stories.

Our final stretch rewards us with a trig point “bag” at the summit and truly epic views across the Sussex Weald. It’s a fitting end to a walk that blends literature, landscape and a touch of childhood wonder.

While the High Street and Pooh Bridge sections are understandably busier, they’re part of the Pooh classics we’ve come to experience. The majority of this walk, however, is peaceful, spacious and wonderfully uncrowded, allowing us to truly appreciate the beauty and quiet magic of Hundred Acre Wood.
