Nature Connection: Mindful Walking Practices in Kent
Estimated reading time 2 minutes
It’s easy to rush—even on a walk. But what if your next outing wasn’t about pace, steps or logging it on an app?
I don't track my walks. I only wear a basic fitness watch when I have to for certain jobs, but overall you'll never see me tracking. I do have an aim to hit 2500 miles by the end of the year but this is tracked without apps so I'm not obsessing over it.
Mindful walking is about being present. And Kent’s landscapes are the perfect canvas for slowing down.

Try this next time you walk:
- Walk in silence for the first ten minutes. Listen: birds, branches, wind, your own breath.
- Notice one thing for each sense—a colour, a scent, a texture underfoot.
- Pause when you see something beautiful. You don’t need to take a photo. Just look.
- Match your breath to your steps—inhale for 3 steps, exhale for 3 steps. It grounds you.
- Walk a short stretch barefoot, if safe, to reconnect with the earth.
- Leave your phone in your bag. Let the woods or the hills hold your attention instead.
Good places for mindful walks: Blean Woods, Joyden’s Wood, Ham Street, or the Greensand Way near Ide Hill.
This kind of walking doesn’t burn calories—it burns stress. And we all need a little less of that nowadays!!
